Overview

Jackson, with a population of about 35,000, is the seat of Jackson County and is located about 40 minutes west of Ann Arbor.  Founded in 1830, Jackson is known as the birthplace of the Republican Party, and was a stop on the Underground Railroad.  Although many Jackson residents work at the variety of businesses and industries located in Jackson, the city is conveniently located to Ann Arbor and Lansing as well.

Jackson is home to the Allegiance Health System, featuring a 411-bed hospital and network of medical and diagnostic centers serving the greater Jackson area.  With over 1100 acres of parkland within the city, Jackson offers its residents a huge range of recreational activities.  Boating and golf are also popular in the Jackson area.  The 62-member Jackson Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1950, and presents a number of concerts each year.

Special events throughout the year enhance life in Jackson, headlined by the annual Hot Air Jubilee, a hot air balloon festival drawing entrants from across the country.  NASCAR is another of Jackson's attractions, with several races through the summer at nearby Michigan International Speedway.

A wide variety of housing styles and ages can be found in Jackson.
